The Plan

Simply put, our plan is to surf for a year. NO, we are NOT taking bikes – believe it or not. We are spending six months in Mexico in this rig.  Katy’s Dad is very generously letting us borrow his truck for this.  We’ll explore the entire length of Baja, then take the ferry from La Paz to Mazatlan on the mainland. From there we will end up in Guerrero at various surf spots. Our Mexican visas are only good for six months, so we will be returning to the US at the end of March. In April of 2012, we leave for SE Asia. We’ll fly into Bali, then spend a few months in Indonesia and potentially Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, and who knows where else. We have budgeted what we think is a year’s worth of travel, so we’ll see how we do!

Are we really going to surf in Indonesia? Well, we think so, but the surf breaks there are above intermediate level due to size and shape of the waves and most of the surf breaks over shallow reef, which looks pretty scary at times. However, we hope that six months will improve our skills so we will arrive in Asia with more experience. We’ll see.  In any case, if the surf is way over our heads, we’ll go look for orangutans or some other jungle creatures, eat yummy street food, and wander around white sand beaches instead.

  1. Hey you two! Good on ya for getting it done! Love it. Emily and I are back in Bend- looking for jobs and insurance. Crazy.

Let’s meet up when you’re in Bend this spring. We can hook you up with a place to stay if you need it and we can share some goodies about Indonesia and the rest of Asia. We loved Bali and we know of a nice family with a nice guesthouse in a traditional fishing village… Hell, we loved it all. But we’re glad to be home and moving on to Our Life phase 2++. See ya after awhile.

    • Hi John! Thanks for the note! We are diggin’ it right now and know that this will change our lives forever. You and Emily will always be an inspiration for me. Sorry you have to “re-enter” and find jobs and other yucky stuff like that. I’m sure all will come out great! Say hi to Bend for me.

  2. This is an unreal adventure! And we (my hubs and I) feel brave for moving to Korea to teach English, write and photojournal. But this is really badass! Thanks for the awesome read and photos, we were literally talking about how much we miss Mexico tonight. Well done and best of luck with Indonesia!
